There aren’t many restaurants where the reservation confirmation depends on the ocean tides, but that’s exactly how it works here. The Rock Zanzibar is basically a tiny stone building perched on a rock, surrounded by the ocean on all sides, just off Michamvi Pingwe beach on Zanzibar’s east coast. At low tide, you can wade out to the restaurant, and at high tide, you’ll need a boat to take you. Either way, it’s a dining experience you’ll remember forever.
How to Get to The Rock Restaurant Zanzibar
When making a reservation at The Rock Zanzibar, you don’t just give them the time you’d like to dine. You receive an arrival window based on that day’s tide chart. Here, the ocean sets the schedule for all diners.
At low tide, you’ll be told to walk over to the restaurant across the sandbar. We recommend wearing shorts so you don’t have to worry about your pants getting wet. And you’ll hold your shoes in your hand as you cross over to the restaurant.
It’s okay if you show up to the restaurant a little wet. It’s part of the adventure, and the restaurant expects it, given where they’re located!
The Food
What we love about the food at The Rock is that they serve super fresh seafood. I mean, given where they’re located, it’s fairly easy to get some fresh fish! You can get everything from octopus to snapper to lobster, depending on the season. It’s not the most inventive food, but it is truly fresh. Prices are a little more expensive here than in the surrounding area, given the view and the experience.
Booking The Rock Zanzibar Restaurant
- Book direct through the restaurant, not a third party, and confirm your tide.
- Skip the fancy shoes for the low-tide walk.
- It’s 30-45 minutes from Stone Town. Stay on the east coast near Michamvi or Pingwe rather than trying to day-trip it.
- Try to make a reservation as early as you can to guarantee a sunset time slot.
The Rock Zanzibar is one of the few places in the world where you can dine entirely surrounded by the ocean. And visiting is an experience you’ll never forget, for the arrival, incredible views, and delicious food.
