From Bangkok, the trip takes about 2.5 hours by car to the province of Kanchanaburi. But travelers can also arrive by train for a more scenic route. Once you reach Phutakien Pier, the final leg of the journey begins. Climb aboard a traditional longtail boat and glide down the river, surrounded by lush jungle and towering cliffs, until the floating villas of the resort slowly come into view. By the time you arrive, it already feels like you’ve discovered somewhere special. And indeed, you have!
What to Expect
The FloatHouse River Kwai is considered a luxury property. That doesn’t mean that your villa will be made of marble and come with a butler. It means that you will have high-end comfort in a remote location. What you do get are nicely appointed rooms that feel authentic to their surroundings, made from teak and bamboo, featuring tall ceilings and thatched roofs. Each room comes with a private terrace, complete with a swing, overlooking the river. While they do have WiFi, it’s limited. When to Go
The best months to go are November through February, when there are cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and less rain. Shoulder season, March through May, is also a decent time to go. It’s a little hotter but still great for river activities. June through October is the rainy season, but that comes with fewer crowds.
