As a mother-daughter duo, we are massive fans of Mamma Mia! here at Travel The Unexpected. We can quote the lines, sing the songs, and honestly even recreate some of the dance moves. So the idea of getting to visit the very island where it was filmed got us so excited. Not only would we get to visit the set of one of our favorite movies, but we’d also get to go to one of the most scenic places in the world: Skopelos, Greece. If you’re planning a trip to Greece, you’re probably considering Athens, Mykonos, or Santorini. And those are great! You should definitely visit those! But we’re here to convince you to add Skopelos to your itinerary, mainly for this incredible Mamma Mia island tour.

Where Was Mamma Mia Filmed?

Mamma Mia was filmed in Skopelos. Skopelos is a gorgeous yet under-the-radar island. It’s located off the eastern coast of mainland Greece, just a short ferry ride from Skiathos. It’s also possible to take a ferry from Athens to Mamma Mia Island.
What is the Mamma Mia Skopelos Tour?

This tour is for fans and travel lovers alike. Even if you’ve never watched the movie, seen the Broadway show, or listened to any of Abba (not sure how this would be possible though!), you’ll enjoy this tour. That’s because at its core, you’ll be getting a tour with a knowledgeable guide of this island that few world travelers think to stop at.
Agios Ioannis Chapel (Chapel of St. John)

For all the movie fans, the major highlight of the tour is walking up the stairs to the famous church on the hill, where Sophie and Sky almost tied the knot. We can just picture everyone on donkeys singing now, can’t you? There are about 200 steps leading to the chapel, but the view from the top is unbelievably worth it.
Kastani Beach
Kastani Beach was another major filming location on the island. You’ll find us here recreating the “Lay All Your Love on Me” sequence. You’ll also recognize it from the beach bar “Does Your Mother Know” scene or the “I Have a Dream” musical number.
Agnontas Beach
Donna, Tanya, and Rosie were all reunited at the harbor here. You’ll get to rest up, swim, and soak up some sun on this beach during the tour.
Three Trees
The Three Trees filming location is what it sounds like. It’s a spot with three trees! And it was featured in the movie in the picnic scene, among others. This area is really popular for swimming and snorkeling thanks to the stunningly clear water. Pro Tip: Wear water shoes in this area since there are sea urchins.
Local Stories
What we love about a guided tour over a self tour is that the guides know locals who were around during the filming of the movies. So they have the inside scoop, the behind-the-scenes stories, and often even photos from filming.
Why This Tour

If you’re a Mamma Mia fan, you probably don’t need any more prompting to take this tour. But you might be wondering if it’s worth adding Skopelos to your travel plans. Most people think they’ll feel like they’ve stepped into the world of Mamma Mia in Mykonos or Santorini. And while the white-washed walls and gorgeous beaches do feel reminiscent of the movie, it’s not quite the same. On Skopelos, you’ll genuinely feel a sense of connection to the movie and your favorite characters as you walk the same paths they did, swim in the same waters, and venture to the same filming locations. Plus, as an added bonus, Skopelos is more affordable and less crowded than most of the other Greek islands, so a stay here would actually help your budget to stretch a little further.

A visit to Mamma Mia island in Greece is not just for die-hard fans (though they’re sure to be ecstatic during this tour). It’s for anyone who wants to relax on a beautiful, lesser-known island. The movie put Skopelos on the map, but its natural beauty and quiet way of life are what truly make it shine. We can’t wait for you all to visit Mamma Mia island.
